Electronic Resources in Further Education libraries

Electronic resources

A number of libraries in East Midlands Further Education Colleges subscribe to electronic resources for access by their staff and registered students. Judi Millage, Assistant Manager at the JISC Regional Support Centre East Midlands, collated information from across the region which is summarised in the attached document:
 

"Top Ten Titles"

The most ‘popular’ titles are listed below for the awareness of library and information professionals. A very diverse range of titles is taken by colleges across the region, from 'Active History' and 'American Journal of Sports Medicine', through 'Institute of Civil Engineers Virtual Library' and 'International Bibliography for Theatre and Dance' to 'Zoo biology' and 'Zut alors'.

Infotrac: access to a wide range of UK and international newspapers and journals

Issues Online: contemporary social issues e.g. homelessness, poverty, gender, crime. Includes: factsheets, newspaper reports and features,magazine articles, journal and book extracts, extracts from Government reports and statistics, pressure-group literature, statistics, including tables and graphs, cartoons and illustrations.

Film & Sound onlineA  set of collections of film, video and sound material, funded by JISC. Several hundred hours of high-quality material are available for download, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research.

Virtual Reference Library: A database of  specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research, with more than 85 reference including encyclopaedias, almanacs, series and more, allowing libraries to provide respected authoritative essays on varied topics from numerous subject areas. Gale Virtual Reference Library for FEJISC and Cengage Learning have provided every FE and Sixth Form College in the UK a core collection of 21 eBook titles, which have been specially selected in collaboration with the JISC Working Groups for eBooks, Learning Materials and the FE Community.

KnowUK: A directory giving information about the people, institutions and organisations of the UK from over 100 key reference titles such as Whitakers Almanac, Ask Hollis, Who's Who, and Which Guides. Information about the local area can be searched for. Areas covered include arts, media, biography, education and government.

Oxford Reference: A cross-searchable collection with over 100 dictionary, language reference and subject reference works published by the OUP It combines in depth content offered by titles in the acclaimed Oxford Companions series with authoritative, quick reference coverage of the full subject spectrum. It is possible to searchover one million entries across 25 subject areas.There is also a Timelines link to events in 20th century.

Hairdressing Training: provides photographic step by step guides combined with lessons and handy tips and techniques, suiting a variety of learning styles. Students can study and revise within the college, at home or even at work allowing greater flexibility. The content from this resource can be easily downloaded and incorporated into learning materials, course packs and student portfolios. Hairdressing Training for Mobiles has been nominated as a finalist in the Handheld Learning Awards 2008.

IHS Technical Indexes: IHS (formerly Technical Indexes, tionestop.com) supplies BritishStandards, Regulations, Product and Supplier Information. Several million pages of information.

E-law Student: For A / AS level law according to AQA and OCR specifications, featuring UK Law News, lectures, case studies, statistics, articles, charts, and a searchable library.

Scran: Scran is a charitable online learning resource base with over 360,000 images and multimedia files from museums, galleries, archives and the media.
